Title: Journal #1: Chapters 1 – 2

Summary

1-2. Give each chapter a title that summarizes the main idea of the chapter. Explain why you think the title is appropriate for the chapter. Be specific!

Analysis

3. Write down the sentence below, filling in the blanks with your own words. You should make a statement about Shane’s personality. Next, explain how the statement is true. Use textual evidence to support your answer. (Answers are expected to be well-elaborated, but do not need to be as lengthy as your poetry expository paragraphs! One or two supports will suffice. See example below for how to format your answer.)

Shane is ________________ because ________________.

4. Write down two specific, open-ended discussion questions about chapters 1-2.

Sample Answer:

Huck is resourceful because he has the ability to look around and use everything he has to complete tasks. For example, when Huck is locked up in his one-room shack, wondering if his father has left for good, he cannot find a way out until he looks closer at the wall and finds “an old rusty saw without any handle; it was laid in between a rafter and the clapboards of the roof) (33). Here Huck uses his keen sense of survival, his ability to find a way out of the house, to create a plan to fake his death to get away from his father.

JOURNAL CH. 3-4

Analysis

Choose two quotations that reveal something about Shane’s character.  Put the quotes in a dialectical journal format and explain what method of characterization is used (see characterization notes) and what this reveals about the character. An example has been done for you.

EXAMPLE: General Zaroff from “The Most Dangerous Game”

Evidence                                                                                                                                     Commentary_______________________

“The weak of the world were                                                                                              Method of characterization: character’s

pleasure…I hunt the scum of                                                                                            What this reveals about the character:

the earth…” (26)                                                                                                                     It shows that Gen. Zaroff feels that he is

superior. He thinks he is better than the

other human beings he hunts. Because

he is strong, he feels like he has the right

to do whatever he wants. The fact that

he calls the people he hunts the scum

of the earth shows how arrogant and

                                                                                                                                                      judgmental he is.

3 & 4: Now, following the same format, do the same for Shane. You should analyze two quotations.
